Examination of the Sigmoid Colon

During a flexible sigmoidoscopy, the patient is made to lie on their left side on a table. The doctor inserts a sigmoidoscope into the anus and tactfully navigates it through the rectum and the sigmoid colon. The colon is inflated with air to give the doctor a good view of its contents. A tiny camera on the sigmoidoscope transmits a video image from inside the colon to a computer monitor. This helps the doctor to carefully examine the sigmoid colon and rectum of the patient.

What to Expect After the Procedure?

Post procedure, you may experience mild cramping of abdomen and gas due to the air that was pumped into your intestine during the procedure. You will recover in 15 minutes to 1 hour.
